La Boite Theatre Company is a leading Australian theatre company working out of the nation’s third largest city. It is a platform for inspired collaboration, seeking to produce and present theatre that draws on the full grammar of performance. Words, music, dance, the visual arts and contemporary performance are among the contributors to a theatre that aims to invigorate minds and emotions. We produce plays, but also create work that privileges other forms of theatrical expression. Stories can be told in many ways, and our work is driven by a desire for fresh enunciations.
We occupy Australia’s only purpose-built theatre-in-the-round, one of only a handful in the world, and embrace its distinctive possibilities. This is an epic-intimate space that calls for a theatre that celebrates the theatrical. It is an arena of inquiry and a coliseum of the senses.
We mostly create our own productions, but also seek collaborations with independent creative teams and both new and established companies from Queensland and beyond. We also present touring work. We have an appetite for new work, from both Australian and international artists, but also a taste for renovating the classic works of world drama by building surprising alliances and approaches. We aim to converse with the times - to unwrap the past and scrutinise the present as a means of expressing our aspirations for the future.
